Sports South’s presence at the Shrine Bowl Coach Bob Sapp, cheerleaders, SB band join the fun By Terry Pope Sports Editor His team didn't leave with a win, but coach Bob Sapp was still pleased with the outcome of Saturday’s 63rd annual Shrine Bowl football game played in Charlotte. The South Brunswick athletic direc tor and head football coach was offen sive line coach for the North Carolina team that included South linebacker Wes Kidd and team manager'll Force. “Thegame didn't turn out like we’d like, but it raised almost $3 million, and that’s what it’s all about,” said Sapp. “It’s great to be a part of that, knowing that you are helping someone in need.” The South Carolina all-star squad’s defense intercepted five passes in the game, all in the second half, and forced five fumbles to roll past the North Carolina team, 24-3. South Carolina continues to lead the series, 35-24-4 and has won six of the last nine Shrine Bowl games. I didn t think I was going to get to play,” said Kidd, after the game. “But I think I played up to my level when I did get in there.” Kidd gave pursuit and made a hard hit on the South Carolina quarterback along the right sideline, jarring the ball loose that rolled out of bounds. He also played on special teams and on kick offs for the entire game. “Wes did a great job,” said coach Sapp. “It was a great experience, and a tremendous amount of fiin.” South Brunswick’s cheerleading squad made the trip Friday afternoon, along with members of the marching Cougar Band. “I really appreciate the support that was shown by our school, by our prin cipal Mr. McAdams and the cheerlead ers and band,” said Sapp. “They all did a tremendous job in representing our school.” Sapp worked on the coaching staff as offensive line coach under head coach Bob Lewis of Clintoq. Sapp was cho sen as head coach of the East-West All Star football game in 1997 and has compiled a winning record at each school he has coached -- 23-15 at Currituck County; 26-18 at North Forsythe; and 68-17 at Mt. Tabor, where he also earned five coach of the year awards. Holiday tourney Crafton, Nance win at the Meadowlands Tom Crafton of Johnsonville and Joe Nance of Little River (S.C.) were as happy as the sunshine was bright last week after winning the Spirit of Christmas Golf Tournament at the Meadowlands Golf Club. They were low gross champions with a score of 61. Low gross runners-up, Steve Gullette and Terry McLamb of Calabash, had a score of 62, and Adam Peters and Bill Malloy finished third with a 63. Robine Soucek and Sue Cleaver of Calabash took the low gross tide in the women’s division with a score of 74. In the second flight, Marty Ekster and Ron Lieb placed first; Dan “Hip” Filipkowski and Chris Doody, second; and Mickey Blazejowski and Bill Prigge, third. There were 132 golfers signed up for the two-person scramble with women making up 18 teams. They began trickling in about 9 a.m. for the 11 a.m. shotgun start, bringing bags of food items, toys and clothing all destined for flood victims in the community. The golfers liked the notion of play ing golf to help the need. “I think it’s a good cause,” said Carolina Jones of Calabash, after donating two filled grocery bags at the tournament.
